Asan Barrage Bird Sanctuary

Asan Barrage is a world famous bird watching spot. It is situated in the district of Dehradun which has been recently declared as a Bird Sanctuary. It is an ideal place for bird watchers where the species of the birds have been declared as globally endangered species in the International Union for the Conservation of Ntaure and Natural Resources (IUCN).

There are 11 varieties of migratory birds in the Asan Barrage during the months of winter. These are - Pintail, Gadwall, Brahminy Duck, Pochard, Pintail, Wigeon, Mallard, Common Teal, Common Pochard, Coot, Tufted Duck, Shoveller. On the other hand, visitors can enjoy the opportunity to watch the local migrants such as Night Heron, Open Billed Stork and Painted Stork. During these months one can get the glimpse of about 25 - 40 Painted Storks in the Sanctuary.

Paonta Sahib Gurudwara

It is a religious site for the Sikhs and is believed that a major part of the Dassam Granth, the sacred book of the Sikhs was written here by the tenth Sikh Guru. It is also been said that Guru Gobind Singh left Anandpur Sahib at the age of 16 to stay here. He was invited by Raja Maidini Prakash. This is how the Gurudwara derived its name. Paonta which means Paon (Foot) as the Guru set his footprints in this place. Sahstra Dhara, situated at the meeting site of River Yamuna and Tong is another attraction near Paonta Sahib. It is also known as Tamsa by the local folks.
